Martin Wesley, Artist

The power of art to heal, to love, and to remind us what it means to be human, is all around us. There are some artists, however, who convey these feelings in a way that feels especially personal to the viewer. It links us to our own journey. Martin Wesley is one of them.

Martin's journey to the easel was unexpected. Born and raised in west Cornwall, he spent twenty years as a fisherman, battling the elements and making a tough living. It was only after the profound impact of a family tragedy that he found how art offered him solace and a way of expressing his deepest emotions.

The experience of man against the ocean is carved deeply into him. The sea is humbling and unforgiving, and it confirmed to Martin how insignificant we all are in life, while at the same knowing that each of us is vital. The human condition and our need to be heard, to express and to feel, is so important. This resonates through all of his work.

Martin’s art is free from convention. The vibrancy of his colours, tempered with the harsh lines within his strokes, are a vivid portrayal of daily struggle and contradictions. He paints mainly with oils for he feels the texture they provide add a layered message to his work.

The Whereabouts Exhibition touches a nerve that reminds us that our journeys are individual, but it is our humanity that binds us.

Jon Curson's Typewriter

Jon Curson (1908 - 1974) is perhaps the most famous son of Tuscett, Alabama. At the beginning of the 19th Century, the small, rural town in America's deep south was an unremarkable strip of land, with one main street and a small spread of shanty houses.

Curson once stated, "Only two things came out of Tuscett; misery and broken dreams." When the Great Depression hit in 1929, the town suffered terribly, and the poverty that Curson witnessed was to shape his life and, by his own admission, was the driving force for him becoming a writer.

In 1931, Curson used this typewriter to write the Nobel Prize winning Another Breeze Blows. The book is considered a defining point in modern American literature, with its informal style and earthy realism that showcased the shattered American Dream.

It is not often we get to see up close the tools of an artist whose work defined an era. This typewriter was generously loaned to the Museum by the Curson Trust as part of our Reaching Literature Exhibition
